The Lighthouse Depot is Closing!

It was raining when we arrived in Ogunquit so we decided to do our shopping. Naturally, we hit the Lighthouse Depot in Wells first. Last year we decided to start a tradition - every year we would buy a "Little Light of Mine" from the Harbour Lights set, starting with Castle Hill. We also spend about an hour browsing their book section, the discount stuff on the second floor, and oggling the larger Harbour Lights (much pricier than the Little Lights).
Even though we ran through the rain to the door, we did notice that something - many things - were missing: Lighthouse man, and the 5 foot replicas that we planned to have in the yard of our future house.
Then we noticed the "60% off inventory reduction sale" and building-for-sale signs. The first step inside confirmed it - the place was empty. They were even selling their display tables, printers, and office supplies.
Were we tickled to get the $90 light-up Scituate Harbor Light for $18? Sure. But it was a sad way to start a vacation. Rob's family (who have been in Ogunquit since before it was Ogunquit) have been going there for decades. We thought we'd take our kids there too.
The Lighthouse Depot was the place for lighthouse lovers - a famous French lighthouse photographer even visited to sign his prints.
It was too depressing to ask why that day, and I can't find anything online.
Harbour Lights Collectibles (a separate company) are still available through the website.

  1. This was one of my favorite places to visit while in Maine, and I didn't know it had closed until last week during a quick visit to Wells. I must admit that I am heartsick, not to mention that as tuned in as I am to lighthouses, Maine, etc that I had never heard of the store's closing! Very sad.

  7. I love lighthouses and this store was a dream come true. I knew it closed yrs ago but wish someone had bought it to keep it alive. Was very sad when it closed. My husband and I stayed at a family run motel many yrs ago every summer.
